Woah, Nelly!

Nelly Furtado ~ Spirit Indestructible

Music analysis by Miss. Ramdini.

After listening to Nelly Furtado’s new single titled Spirit Indestructible I have royally dubbed her the Canadian Pop-princess!  With the help of one of the best music producers in today’s industry, Rodney Jerkins aka “Dark Child,” who has worked with the likes of Destiny’s Child, TLC, and Lady Gaga to name a few, this song is sure to become a chart topper for Nelly.

The song begins with a slow synthesized piano as Nelly belts out the first lines; I was expecting it to be a down-tempo ballad but I should have known this is Dark Child’s handy work which means expect a mixture of beats. Nelly’s serenade carries into a welcomed entrance of drum & bass reminiscent to Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock’s “It Takes Two.” The great thing about “Spirit Indestructible” is Nelly makes a personal connection with the song and is able to inspire others with her lyrics—it’s a 180 from her first single “Big Hoops” but it shows that she is still capable at creating beautiful lyrics as well as catchy dance songs. I love how Nelly doesn’t process her voice with an auto-tune; it’s just raw, real, and unique.

To sum up, the track is an impressive 80’s R&B throwback with Nelly’s powerful vocals. I’m hoping this single will show a good comeback for Nelly demonstrating the quality of work she has been churning out since 2000.

Her new album also titled Spirit Indestructible is set to release September 14, 2012.
