Lorde ~ New Princess of Indie-Pop?

So, it looks like I’ve neglected this blog for almost 3 months now and I honestly have no excuse for it; I’ve simply been lazy. However, that’s all about to change with this new post, so prepare yourselves! A young up and coming singer from New-Zealand has caught my attention and I thought I’d share with you all the greatness of Lorde. Now, if you don’t know who Lorde is yet, you’ve come to the right place! I first heard about her through a friend who wanted to show me one of her videos. At 16, (I still can’t believe this girl is 16, she has such a powerful voice!!), Lorde aka Ella Yelich-O’Connor has released an EP titled The Love Club in early March of this year and as of yesterday, will be releasing her first album on September 30, 2013 titled Pure Heroine. The song in question that garnered my attention is called “Tennis Court,” and is the second single off of her EP. Be warned, the video may creep you out at first but you’ll get used to it, maybe.

Do you love it? I know I do! Like I said, at first glance, the video is a bit strange considering Lorde is staring through your soul with those big, doleful eyes and not moving her mouth for the majority of the video however, that’s what makes her unique. The simple style of the video is creative and engaging while demonstrating that she doesn’t require a flashy music video to distract you from the music and that’s what I admire about her -taking a risk with letting the music speak for itself. “Tennis Court” is a mid-tempo R&B/Indie-pop song reminiscent to a young Lana Del Rey with that catchy bad-girl vibe. She has a soothing voice and the lyrics speak to a depth that is rare in ‘pop’ that makes it onto the radio. Again, I have to repeat to you that she is just 16 years old! To me, that means she can have a long career ahead of her and I’m hoping she won’t allow fame to interfere with her musical talent. However, judging from the line “But, I know they’ll never own me,” probably don’t need to worry about that.

To sum up, you all should look out for Lorde on your radars; I’m sure her new album will be a hit and other artists can take notes from such a young, artistic talent. Check out her first single titled “Royals” below!

Let’s go down to the tennis court, and talk it up like yeah (yeah) 😉
